JoSilver's News

Posted by JoSilver - November 8th, 2020

Just a quick little update this week. Not much to talk about this week or at least not much to talk about that I had prepared. Anyone not in the know, I'm doing updates on what I'm up to every two weeks here on Newgrounds so come on over to hear the latest news on what I am doing.

As I stated in my last update I was planning on cleaning up and releasing some models of mine to the public. And I've been hard at work on that. I've made some great progress on it. So I hope to release soon Toy Chica from Five Nights at Freddy's.

iu_191911_2133929.jpg

She's Basically finished and ready to use, I just want to work on maximizing user friendliness (Labling thing's, creating proper documentation of the rig, ect...) With all that said anyone hoping to snag this model for themselves I need to state that this model will not be Game Ready, for example anyone looking to port the model to SFM or any other game engine will have to put in a bit of extra leg work but It was initially made for the game Haydee, so it won't take too much extra work to get it up and running. Anyone looking to create art with her in blender, she'll be ready to use out the box, Eevee or Cycles.

I was hoping to have her ready by now but it's been a bit of a crazy week, a lot of impassioned screaming and crying and cheering and celebration. All of which has monopolized a lot of my time, not that I wasn't working just not as much as I'd have liked to. Politics, AMIRITE!

I'll have the Chica Model ready to go hopefully soon stay tune for an update on where and how you can get you're hand on it.

On a side note anyone looking to snag a few of my Minecraft Models for themselves should slide on over to The Busty Creeper page on Itch.io and download the game for those extra goodies.

The Busty Creeper on Itch.io

Anyways, that's it for now.

And with that, See y'all again soon.

So like I said in my last post, I'm going to be posting every 2 weeks on what I'm doing, what's going on, ect.. ect... So I'm going to keep this trend going for as long as I can. K, COOL.

I suppose if I have a problem it's that I simply have an issue with focusing on one thing. I have too many ideas and not enough time and resources to get to them all. Then couple that lack of focus with a lack of focus on what exactly it is that I'm working on and that's a soup too spicy for mortal men to handle.

What's been helping me through this funk is instead of focusing on the big picture, focus on what do I need to do today to get something done. Divide and conquer, make a big problem in to a set of tiny problems, Those in the coding know might call it agile programing. I'd say it's mostly working, it's easy for me to become overwhelm with what needs to get done eventually, and instead I try to focus on what I need to do right now. When it comes to programing I feel that means sometimes taking a step back and thinking the problem through carefully.

But enough of that mumbo jumbo, what is the point of this? My point is I more or less want to share what I plan to do in the short term, like the next two weeks. So one thing I want to start doing is releasing some of my old models for public use. I'm not doing anything with them nor do I really have any plans to. I want to do this for a number of reasons. One I'm not doing anything with them and people have expressed intrest in the past for them. Secondly, one way I learned about modeling was Downloading models and seeing what other people did. I learned a lot about topology and rigging and that what have you that way. I don't claim to be an expert but if my models can help someone learn something then it would have been worth it.

So for the next week or so I'm going to be working on cleaning up some old models of mine and releasing them, how exactly am I doing to distribute them... I'm not entirely sure. I'm thinking deviantart or sketchfab but that means another account for something I'd have to manage... Idealy I'd rather do it through something I'm already active on.

So what models am I considering releasing... a couple. here's a few works with models I'm considering releasing or going to release.

So why these and not others. These are things that I am proud of and/or have no plans to continue working on. Also there has been a vocal demand for it. Now I'm not saying that come Novemeber all of these will be out in the wild and ready to be used, No. But I'm working on bringing them to the public. The issue with a lot of them is that I've learned a lot while working on them. and I've made a lot of mistakes. Mistakes that I've learned from to make the up coming Tales of Luka not a nightmare to work on.

Alot of the issues lies with organization. Things not being labled, things being a disorganized mess. It's a bad habit to get into, of not organizing your work because no one else is going to see it... Problem comes when you also haven't seen it in months. That's when you punish yourself with an entire bottle of scotch.

Also there are a few things I know I can clean up, be that topology or the rig used or what have you. Things that don't effect the final render so much but do effect how easy it is to work with the model.

______________________________________________________________________________

So with that said just wanted to share with you all what I have this week for you all that's new.

I've been working on updating all the character models and textures to be constant with the new art style of Tales of Luka. It's not too daunting of a task since, maybe I'm giving away too much of how the sausage is made, all the character are based off the same basic mesh. All I do is reshape them a bit here and there. The real work lies in the hair and clothes. Point is these are the final designs for the characters. I might make a few tweaks here and there but other than that they are done... Only thing that truly bugs me are the shoulders... and I'm not sure what to do... IDK I'll think of something.

Here's some more artwork... Woo hoo.

Anyways that it for now.

And with that, See y'all again soon.

So, to start things off I just want to thank everyone who, favorited, voted on, donated on itch,io and anyone who just enjoyed The Busty Creeper. Also a big thanks to everyone who's become a fan. I know I'm not the best keeping you guys happy but it means alot and I appreciate everything. I wouldn't be doing any of this without you guys or at least put in nearly as much effort as I do, So again thank you guys so much.

But most importantly I just want to keep you guys up to date on what I'm doing, Honestly though, be prepared for a lot of me faffing about, I've said in the past I like to jump around between projects, but I'm getting alot better at focusing on one thing. But right now I don't have a big focus, just projects I need to get off the ground.

So while I sort that I out I just want to let you all know what's happening with Luka.

iu_179391_2133929.jpg

Luka's Current Design.

Now, I won't be too surprised if some of you hate this new design, it took me a while to accept it, but simply this is where things were being drawn. I wanted her to hold things, so I needed to have hands and fingers or atleast to make it believable, Without hands I was spending a lot of time trying to make her holding something and not look silly. SO, then once I added hands the hands on blocky arms just looked wrong, so I have to reshape the arms to look more realistic and I just hated the way it looked. one decision lead to another and I eventually got to where she is now. I must have iterated on just Luka alone hundreds of time, just small nitpicky things, like, you know, I think the boobs should be more like that, or are forearms too long, too short, or I think her feet look cute like this but not like that.

Basically Luka's design went in one direction and my minecraft girls went in the other.

iu_179392_2133929.jpg

Minecraft Girl Design.

As you can see there is a lot of common DNA between the two, but really what truley happened was I was getting frustrated with Luka's design or I should say the changes that I wanted to make just not working. So I went in the other direction, more blocky, more minecrafty, make that work. I sorta ended up solving a problem with one an brought it over to the other and vice versa. Or I decided that doesn't work here but maybe if I tweak it there.

Luka's design changed so much really because with her I wanted to make her distinct from Minecraft and the Minecraft Girl obviously I wanted to make her more minecraft.

With the more blocky design I was pretty limited in what I could do versus what I wanted to do and finding creative solutions to problems is always fun, it's just not what I wanted to do with Luka. That was exactly what I wanted to do with my creeper model, I spent a lot of time just trying to make her legs work on a fundamental level, like how would it even work!?

iu_179393_2133929.jpg

Peak creativity.

However with Luka that was not my goal and on top of that I have a lot of other issues I need to solve apart from character designs. Building blocky landscapes is a difficult and time consuming task. In the picture above I tryed to make the land mass in the background but eventually just became frustrated with how crap is was coming out and how much time it was gonna take for it not to be crap. so I said screw it, opened up minecraft, took a screen shot and called it a day.

I'm currently working on a tool that will aid in the world building process and today I just had a bit of a brain blast when it comes to solving a problem I wanted to solve for the longest time... slopes. Slopes are tricky not because they are somehow hard to add, they are tricky because you go from having one basic unit of geometry, a cube, to dozens. A east facing slope, a west facing slope, a north west facing outside slope, a south east facing inside slope and lets not forget about, sloped ceilings either. I tryed implementing this and it just became a nightmare ,so I decided to stop, this isn't working or at the very least is too complex for not much gain. I said to myself what if I just made everything a cube instead, and I was like yeah that could work that that's another nightmare of edge cases and arbitrary logic.

To demonstrate what I'm getting at with making everything a cube this picture will demonstrate the basic idea.

On the left is a stair-step shape, 90 degree angles and all, but on the right is the same shape just with the points that make it up shifted around just a smidge.

iu_179394_2133929.jpg

Left: Unsmoothed Stairs. Right: Smoothed Stairs.

my solution to this problem isn't quite so simple as move the points around but basically it is, but it's a general solution and not a mess of in this case do that and in this case do this, I haven't tested it extensively but I got high hopes it's gonna work.My old solution was on a per-block level but this one is on a per-vertex level and because of that it should just work.

But to circle back to Luka just for a minute, The major thing about the new designs is that It allows me to do more with out saying to myself how, I just have to do it. I desiged a bunch of peasants to populate Luka's world and none of them are done not by a long shot but the new designs just allowed be to really just try whatever because now I can change more than just the skin and hair, now I can really reshape the body and face and eyes and the clothes.so yeah I think I'm sticking with it.

Rough Peasant Designs (WIP)

Anyways, I hope you guys found any of that interesting if not, oh well. I am going to from now on do a bi-weekly post about what I'm working on. Just trying to keep you guys in the loop. I get a lot of questions and request from you guys. feel free to let me know what you think, what you want to see from me or any other thing,

And with that, See y'all again soon.

Check em out. So I been working on these two for like that past month or two. It took way longer than anticipated for a number of reason but boy am I glad to have them out and ready for you guys.

In the before times I made the following image set...

I had every intention of make The Busty Creeper into a gallery, I actually had it mostly finished, but... s@#t happened.

In a way it's good that I didn't finish it then. Over the past months and such I was toying around with updated the models and I'm quite pleased with how the came out.

By the way if you'd like to download and use them for yourself head on over to itch.io and while you're at it why not donate a little something too, it would be greatly appreciated.

I got plenty of new stuff planned. Hopefully the next thing will come soon, I'm planning on having atleast one new thing out this year, before flash goes ka-put that is. CURSE YOU STEVE JOBS!

So I shall start by answering the following question, Just that the hell am I up to. Short answer is same ol' same ol', longer answer is multiple large projects, 3 of which are almost ready to go. Now odds are that Might have you asking another question, Why in the hell do you have three large projects almost ready to go but none are out yet. A number of reasons, Self loathing, Work, Family. But biggest issue all, Flash is practically dead. The main issue is I've yet to find a suitable alternative to flash for my purposes for the future. So I've basically just continued making stuff in flash despite the fact by next year, Flash will be officially depreciated and support for it even dropped by some browsers.

All that's got me the thinking why even bother, why bother continuing, why not look for something new to target as a platform. The main issue being I like working with flash. I know all it's in's and out's I feel comfortable working with it.

Another issue is I don't use a creative cloud version of Adobe Animate... or for that matter Adobe Animate at all. I use Flash Professional, the same old version I've been using for years. So either I start using Animate to make HTML 5 content or I move on to something else.

Frankly I don't want to make HTML 5 content as I've Fallen Madly in love with Unreal Engine 4. And UE4 has frankly awful HTML 5 support, certainly when it comes to getting stuff running here on Newgrounds.

So to the point, why Bother...

BECAUSE I CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THREE GAMES COMING SOON TO SMACK Y'ALL IN THE FACE, IT'S NOW OR NEVER AND I CHOOSE NOW!

*Edit 7/20/19

You know, these pass couple of days I've pretty much just been spending all my time bring my projects in to a releasable state. I'm the kinda of person who fixates on problems rather try to overcome them, A bad habit. Nothing will halt progress on something better than not working on it and instead worrying about how you're gonna do something rather than trying to do it.

Lately I've gotten in to the mindset of just to do something and fix it later if it don't work. And frankly I'm kicking myself here just because of how little work I acutally need to do to bring a lot of my backlog projects in to a presentable state.

Point is things are going smooth and on schedule.

*CLOSED*

Hello, I'm looking for Musician to help me finish up a project that I've been toiling away at, Yes it's adult in nature but It should be fun! The music is the finishing touch I need to send it screaming out the door and boy howdy will it scream!

The reason I'm looking for a musician is that I want something specific, but a particular sound would be up to you to nail down. To give away more would be to spoil things. If you're interested send me a pm, along with some samples.

Can't really offer any money right now as I am a broke bastard. But I can offer full right and Earnings on the song as well as some more eyeballs on your work.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Happy New Years, Yall! I hope you all get out there and party this suck ass year in to it's grave! 2018 truly sucked, politics and we lost some great people with year. A whole bunch of bullcrap happened to me this year, but that's behind us now and it's Time to Party and Celebrate.

This year I've uploaded more art than anyother and I though the best way to celebrate was to countdown my highest scoring art of the year!

#10 Luka n' Zanshi - Hot Sand : A little animated peice, I hope to do more in 2019.

#9  BeeBee Promo B12-BEEBEE : A little experiment of giving Balloon Boy my FNAF treatment.

#8  Garnet Quickie #0 : Just a quick sketch of Garent and Jasper.

#7  Introducing Sex Doll Barbie - Nude Ver. : More experimenting, But this time with Baribe!

#6  Quality Assurance G16-CHICA : A part of AFTON TESTING WORKSTATION, Remastered.

#5  ファッション・フォーワド-FF : More fun with Barbie!

#4  Haydee: Peace Mode : Haydee playing nice with a bot.

#3  ROM FLASH G16-CHICA : A spooky peice with endoskeletons.

#2  Interface Testing #2 G16-CHICA : Two Chicas doing things.

#1  Summer Time Lovin', Lovin' in the Summer (Time) : Easily my favorite of the year and I'm glad all you felt the same. I had alot of fun with this one.

Tell me what your favorite of the year was or heck what you'd like to see more of in 2019 from me. At midnight I'm gonna kick of 2019 with a new peice for a new year... That is if I not too drunk to rememeber but I'll try.

Also I'll be revamping my pateron in 2019, new rewards to better reflect what I do around here.

Happy Hoildays and here's hoping 2019 WON'T SUCK QUITE SO HARD!

So, I had a project that I've been working on for a while now, it was something small, probally no one was gonna like it. You've probally nocticed the amout of galleries I've done lately, They were galleries because 3D animation was always tricky for me. Not because 3D animation was necessarily hard, It's not harder than posing really. At the time getting animations from blender to Unreal was difficult. I also didn't know how to properly skin a mesh to work well in unreal then either, Static Poses worked best for me at the time. Even now the issue with unreal at the moment is frame timing, for long animation it works fine but for animation that only last 15- 12 frames sycning animations to loop correctly is difficult.

So I've shifted my focus to Blender Cycles, I think it's fair for me to say that I've managed to produce some pretty stunning work with it, Problem is, It's SLOW! In case y'all aren't aware this picture took 4 hours to render.  And that's not even the longest I've taken to render something. Long render time effectlvely make animations for me impossible, or atleast at a decent resolution with minimal noise.

I've mainly been waiting for a stable release of blender 2.8 to start experimenting with EEVEE. The project I'm working on was basically my best effort to give cylces for animation a chance. A fully lit scene, in doors, which is simply a nightmare when it comes to render times. I was only able to get about 6 15 frame animations done in a resonable time each one requiring several hours of rendering all at only 640 X 360 resolution and noisy as all hell. That's the best I can get.

BUT I started experiement with just using Bender 2.79 Open GL rendering, first with the game engine, which went badly, Then just trying to get the viewport rendering to not look like hot garbage. Frankly I think I've done it It looks now where near like the result I can get with Cylces (But that goes with out saying really) But It looks pretty good.

But my 6 15 frames 640 X 360 noisy animations has jumped from at least 48 animations at whatever length I think is best at 1920X1080 with no noise. I think it's pretty clear which path I should presue. Hopefully 2.8 will come out soon next year or atleast a stable build of 2.8 so I can actually do some 3D animation. However in the mean time I'm pretty happy how it's going so far so atleast for now, they can take their time.

I've only just started trying this way of doing things, and already I've accomplished way more in 2 days then I did by just using cycles over about 2 months. an animation that took 3 hours to render at 640X360 now only takes me 10 minutes or so at really any resoultion I want and most of that time is wasted on me setting things up and making sure everything is in place. So yeah, I'm excited!

Something BIG is coming.

So It's been a while since I posted anything. Unfortunately I'm the kind of person who just shuts down when things are... Not great. So this june a number of things happened.

The first of which was my job closed one day... and they haven't opened since. They promised me they would re-open in two weeks... But that was this June! So Money was a problem for me lately but fortunatley I've recently found a new job and am working again, So THAT'S GREAT!

Second my mother was diagnosed with cancer, which consumed a great portion of my though and time for a good month. But not to worry, they caught it just in time and my mother has already had surgery to have it removed. Everything is looking good and we're hopeful for the future.

But with that said I've haven't been doing nothing but sitting on my ass this whole, I've been working on a number of things lately, I got a lot of Ideas and one of them anyways will be ready soon, like I'm putting finishing touches on it soon. It's a lot of fun and when you get a chance to play it I hopefully it will have been worth my silence for a few months. There are also a couple projects that I've either just started work on finally have a solid concept for. Hopefully I'll have more news on all that soon.

Anyways that's basically what I've been up to lately.
